Can I Avoid Pneumonia? The good news about pneumonia is that there are things you can do to avoid it. Follow these habits for keeping yourself as healthy as possible. • Wash your hands. You should especially do this after each trip to the bathroom, after blowing your nose, after changing a diaper, and before preparing and eating food. Handwashing prevents the spread of pneumonia. • Don’t smoke, and if you smoke, get help quitting. Tobacco makes it harder for your body to fight off infection. Smokers are at higher risk of getting pneumonia because smoking damages the lungs. Talk to your doctor about medications and other therapies that can help you quit. Call the Quit Line for support: 1-800-QUIT-NOW. • Use good health habits. Eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of physical activity are great ways to keep yourself healthy—and to fight off infection. • Wear a mask if you are in an area that could possibly have pneumonia-causing germs. People who work around chemicals, landscaping dust, and crowded living spaces should wear masks. 8
