Getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent pneumonia. This is very important to African-American and Hispanic/Latino communities, who get vaccines less often than other people. Minorities and Vaccines According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Minority Health, in 2014 non-Hispanic African Americans age 65 and older were 20 percent less likely to have received the influenza (flu) vaccine in the past 12 months than were white people of the same age group. Similarly, less than half of African Americans age 65 and older received a pneumonia vaccine in 2014, compared to nearly 65 percent of whites. 6
