How Can My Doctor Tell Whether I Have FH? Your doctor will begin by doing a physical exam. During this exam, your doctor will look for any of the signs of FH. For most American adults, a blood test called a fasting lipoprotein profile is recommended every five years. For people with any of the symptoms listed above, it’s critical that they get their blood tested as soon as possible. Your doctor will order this test if he or she suspects you have FH. 5 This blood test will show whether you have high total and LDL cholesterol, and what your triglyceride levels are. Having high levels of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides are signs that something is wrong. Why is this so important? Because LDL cholesterol and triglycerides can build up on the inner walls of your arteries, forming buildups that are called plaques. These plaques can keep building up over time and even choke off the blood supply to the heart, brain, or the rest of the body. This condition is called atherosclerosis. The result can be a heart attack or stroke, either of which can threaten your life. PLAY VIDEO Getting Your Cholesterol Tested
